Purposes of Collection, Use and Disclosure of Personal Information
Schweda Law collects, uses, and discloses personal information. Personal information means information about an identifiable individual. We collect personal information to provide services to our clients, including conducting workplace or other investigations and providing legal advice to our clients. We will only collect, use, and disclose personal information for those purposes. We will seek your consent to collect, use, and disclose personal information for any other unrelated purposes, except in those circumstances where the law permits or requires collection, use, and disclosure without consent.
We collect, use, and disclose personal information in compliance with Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). The Privacy Officer for Schweda Law is Jacob Schweda, and he can be contacted at Jacob@SchwedaLaw.ca. If the Privacy Officer does not adequately resolve a concern, individuals can contact the Alberta Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (www.oipc.ab.ca).
Personal Information Protection
Schweda Law recognizes our PIPA obligation to protect the confidentiality of personal information that we collect. We store personal information on password-protected devices and using commercial cloud storage services with industry-standard privacy protection systems. In the rare occasions when personal information is contained in a physical format, we will store such records in a secure location.
All firm members will use two-factor authentication when offered by devices and/or systems.
Schweda Law will not disclose or sell personal information in order to allow a third party to market their products or for other commercial purposes.
Notice of Data Storage Systems
Schweda Law uses commercial-grade software and systems to store and transmit information. This may result in information being stored in and transferred to/from servers located outside of Canada.
Personal Information Access and Correction
You may have the right to access and/or correct personal information that we hold about you. To make a request for access and/or correction, please contact the Privacy Officer listed above. Please note that much or all of your personal information may be protected by solicitor-client or other legal privilege. We will reply to your request within 45 days and inform you what information, if any, may be accessed and/or corrected.
Record Retention and Destruction
As a digital-first firm, Schweda Law stores records digitally for a minimum of ten years, minus transitory records. The firm will typically destroy records after 10 years, unless a compelling reason exists to retain them.
